Sky View Factor

Sky visibility in spaces

DL-Light calculates the Sky View Factor. The view of the sky for architectural or urban projects is a key element of the well-being in spaces.

DL-Light allows with one view to understand how and where the sky is most visible for all the chosen spaces thanks to a visualisation of false colors quantified on a palette.

The Sky View Factor is the fraction of the sky that is visible from the various surfaces of the model. Its values can be expressed as a percentage or a solid angle.

The Sky View Factor is usable since the first steps of the design phase, when the level of details is low. Only a few information are required about the position and geometry of the building and the environment.

The Sky View Factor results for various surfaces of the project influence the decisions for strategies on thermal and lighting behaviour.

An overall calculation of the mean and median of the Sky View Factor for all calculated areas is available in the file “cumulative_results.txt” in the results folder. This specific result is particularly in use in Australia.
